How Due Dates Are Calculated (4 Methods)

Last Menstrual Period (Naegele's Rule)

Due Date = LMP + 280 days, adjusted for cycle length

The standard clinical method, assuming a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14.

Conception Date

Due Date = Conception Date + 266 days

Used when the conception date is known more precisely than LMP.

IVF Embryo Transfer

Day 5 Transfer: Due Date = Transfer Date + 261 days
Day 3 Transfer: Due Date = Transfer Date + 263 days

Ultrasound Dating

Due Date = Scan Date + (280 − Gestational Age at Scan, in days)

Considered more accurate than LMP when done early, especially with irregular cycles.

How Accurate Is a Due Date Calculator?

A due date is a statistical estimate, not a prediction of the exact delivery day. Only about 5% of babies are born on their calculated due date, while most deliveries happen anywhere from about three weeks before to two weeks after it. An early ultrasound (ideally in the first trimester) is generally considered the most accurate dating method, particularly for people with irregular cycles or uncertain LMP dates.
