Why Area Conversion Isn't Just a Length Conversion
A common mistake: using a length conversion factor (like feet to meters) directly on an area. Area factors must be squared.
Worked Example: 1,500 sq ft House to Square Meters
Common Property & Land Sizes
| Description | Square Feet | Square Meters |
|---|---|---|
| Small studio apartment | ~400 ft² | ~37 m² |
| Typical 2-bedroom apartment | ~900 ft² | ~84 m² |
| Medium family home | ~2,000 ft² | ~186 m² |
| Large single-family home | ~3,500 ft² | ~325 m² |
| 1 acre | 43,560 ft² | 4,047 m² (0.405 ha) |
| 1 hectare | 107,639 ft² | 10,000 m² |
| 1 football/soccer pitch (approx.) | ~76,000 ft² | ~7,140 m² (~0.71 ha) |
Traditional & Regional Land Units
Property listings outside the US/UK metric-imperial split often use local units. Here's what they mean in square meters.
| Unit | Region | Equals |
|---|---|---|
| Ping / Tsubo | Taiwan, Japan | 3.3058 m² (35.58 ft²) |
| Rai | Thailand | 1,600 m² (0.16 ha, ~0.395 acres) |
| Guntha | India (Maharashtra, Karnataka) | 101.17 m² (1,089 ft², 1/40 acre) |
Some traditional land units (such as the bigha in India) vary significantly by region and aren't included here to avoid giving an inaccurate figure — always confirm the local definition for those units directly.
Comparing Property Prices Across Measurement Systems
A "$200/sq ft" listing and a "€2,000/m²" listing aren't directly comparable at a glance — but $200/ft² works out to about $2,152.78/m², which makes the comparison meaningful. This is one of the most common points of confusion when comparing international property listings, and it's exactly what the Price per Area mode above solves.
